What a spectacular day!
What a wonderful way to celebrate the Apple Harvest. This was the first time the Orchard Group had hosted their Apple Day at the village recreation ground and it was a great success. Mainly because Paul Chilton had plenty of room for his GIANT display of 120 heritage varieties of apple presented in the traditional exhibition style:
you will NEVER see these apples in a supermarket!
There were over 12 different varieties of apple to taste; favourites were Ashmead's Kernel, Adam's Pearmain, Egremont Russet, Sunset, Golden Pippin, Pitmaston Pineapple, and Spartan.
There were tables almost as long as the apple display full of cakes and cookies and pies and flapjacks all made using apples.
The apple press was in action for 5 hours!! At one point they were running out of apples so some of us had to race down to one of the orchards in the village, pick fast and then race back.
Five Little Pigs of Wallingford, provided fabulous food and The Charleston Bar kept us warm with coffee and mulled cider. Jessica's Jars and Cox's Orchards sold delicious jams and preserves and juices and cordials all from within 10 miles locally.
